Dynamic Balancing is a Specialty at Atlas

When it comes to precision balancing rotating equipment, Atlas has established itself as a leader in the region. The company has a proven track record balancing Caterpillar crankshafts, as well as blowers, fans, mixers, rolls, pulleys, pump shafts and impellers, rotors, spindles and more.
Atlas is capable of dynamic balancing any rotating part measuring up to 6-feet in diameter and 20-feet long, and weighing up to 10,000 lbs.
Atlas expertise has gained the confidence of the region’s Caterpillar dealers with its three-step process of repairing 3500 series crankshafts to “like new” condition and in accordance with Caterpillar Specifications. The Atlas method involves:
• Machining counterweight mounting pads to remove fretting
• Machining new counterweights to ensure critical centerline mounting distance
• Balancing the crankshaft with counterweights that are installed using bobweights to simulate rod and piston masses
“Over time we have taken our dynamic balancing capabilities to an art form,” said Kevin Brown, Grind Shop Supervisor and specialist in the shop for nearly 30 years. "Our equipment is the best there is."
Brown also praised the high level of skill of Atlas' balancing operators and their many years working as machinists. Atlas' five balancing operators have nearly 70 years of experience as machinists with the company.
Balancing Saves Money
Atlas’ solid reputation as a dynamic balancing specialist has gained the trust of its many customers, such as steel and aluminum mills, printing companies, engine rebuilders, paper mills, pump rebuilders, and more.
They look to Atlas and its proven balancing capabilities to drastically cut downtime costs of rotating equipment needed to produce their products. Atlas also provides its balancing customers full-engineering support services, which contributes to customer cost-savings and quick job turnaround.
“When you think about all the advantages, it just makes sense to make dynamic balancing a part of any company’s preventive maintenance routine,” said Brown. “Our customers know that we can reduce their cost and avoid potential downtime by keeping their equipment balanced."
