Atlas Handles Massive Machining Job on Site

When it comes to tackling challenging field machining jobs, more and more companies are looking to the expertise of Atlas Machine and Supply, Inc. to meet their needs.

One such recent job, handled out of Atlas’ Cincinnati, Ohio facility, involved the portable machining of a 90-ton component used in straightening railroad rails.

Size and surface irregularities within the part’s nearly 3-foot holes led Morgan Engineering, located in Alliance, Ohio, to seek Atlas’ help in re-honing their surfaces before shipping the part on to Eastern Europe. The re-honed holes will eventually hold shafts within the main housing of a modern, computer-controlled railroad straightening machine.  The job also involved drilling and tapping 64 holes on 8 flange faces.

The weight and sheer size of the part—which measures approximately 23-feet long, 14-feet high, and 8-feet deep—required the work be done with portable equipment at Morgan’s headquarters in northern Ohio, near Cleveland.

Three Atlas machinists with extensive experience in field machining were called upon to handle the job.  They were Dean Sprague and Jeff Smith working out of Atlas’ Cincinnati facility, and Joe Bradley Donnely from Atlas’ plant in Louisville.  Their work was completed on time and in budget.

“We take pride in knowing that the skills of our machinists have played a role in the delivery of this part to its ultimate destination thousands of miles away,” says Sonny Welker, Regional Manager of Atlas' Machine Shop in Cincinnati.

And most important of all, Atlas’ customer—Morgan Engineering—was well-satisfied with the quality of the work done by our machinists.
