Atlas invests in the future - in a BIG way

The largest and one of the most expensive pieces of equipment ever purchased by Atlas is now operational at the company’s Louisville facility. The new 30-ton Johnford CNC horizontal boring mill was bought in Chicago at the International Manufacturing Technology Show last September. The purchase represents an investment of nearly a half a million dollars.
According to Atlas’ president Rich Gimmel, the hefty investment was prompted by an optimism that Atlas’ customers—the manufacturing industry—are beginning to rebound from the economic downturn.
The mill required about four months for delivery to our Louisville plant. Before the machine’s arrival, the shop’s floor was reinforced from 9-inches to 30-inches of concrete to support the machine’s massive weight and provide for its stable operation. The actual installation took about three weeks, and training of our machinists added an additional week.
Specially trained to operate the mill are machinists Tim Staples, Laddie DePas, Chad Vessels, and Adam Goodman. Overseeing the machine’s operation is John Hardin, Shop Supervisor.
The new CNC mill has already opened up opportunities to work on a variety of heavier jobs that could not be handled previously by our smaller Toshiba CNC mill purchased ten years ago. The Johnford mill is also handling overflow work from the Toshiba.
Increased heavier capacity and increased ability to handle a backlog of work are further reasons Atlas is optimistic about the year ahead. For more information about the Johnford CNC mill and how it can meet your company's machining needs, contact us at 855-GO-ATLAS.
