Atlas "rescues" boat used in bridge repair

Safety measures require that a rescue boat be positioned near the Sherman Minton Bridge during its structural repair. The boat could potentially serve as a life-saver if a worker fell from the bridge into the Ohio River while on the job.

So when a submerged log in the swollen river cracked a safety vessel’s propeller shaft, the shaft had to be repaired, and it had to be done quickly. That’s where Atlas Machine and Supply enters the story.

The broken and bent shaft was brought to Atlas at the beginning of the second shift. Within a few hours the Machine Shop had manufactured a brand-new stainless steel replacement more than five feet in length. The cost to the customer ended up being less than if the damaged shaft had been repaired.

When “minutes matter”

Over the years, Atlas has earned a reputation in the United States for its skill in completing jobs requiring a quick turnaround. In this case, the 32-foot safety boat was available to patrol the river again in about 12 hours.

Atlas was pleased to play an indirect role in the repair of the bridge, says Dennis Hanna, Vice President for Operations and General Manager. “This is a great example of what we do routinely and the good teamwork between Engineering and Machine Shop.”

“When minutes matter, companies look to Atlas for help,” adds Mr. Hanna. “It’s one of the things we do best.”

The bridge has been closed for structural repairs since early September and is scheduled to re-open in March. Completion of the repairs is a high priority because of the closure’s negative effect on cross-river traffic and business in the area.
