Atlas Machine & Supply is proud to announce Case Compton as the 2026 recipient of the Phillip Payne Memorial Tool Scholarship.
A 2026 graduate of Meade County High School and first-year Atlas Apprentice, Case was selected for his exceptional work ethic, dedication to learning, and passion for the trade. His application reflected the values that define both Atlas and the legacy of Phillip Payne – craftsmanship, determination, and a genuine willingness to help others.
Case's interest in machining began on his family's farm, where he grew up watching his grandfather and brother repair equipment. One experience in particular, helping repair his grandfather's combine during harvest, inspired him to pursue a career where he could become someone others could depend on when equipment needed to be repaired or built.
That passion continued throughout high school at the Meade County College and Career Center, where Case studied under machining instructor Dean Monarch. Beyond the classroom, he participated in SkillsUSA and Project MFG competitions, designed and fabricated demolition derby lawn mowers, and established his own small fabrication business, C2 Fabrication.
Case's initiative and commitment to improvement were especially evident when he approached Monarch about preparing for a career with Atlas's Field Services Division. After being encouraged to expand his welding skills, Case independently enrolled in an evening welding course and successfully earned his welding certification.
As Monarch recalled, "He didn't simply talk about improving himself—he took action."
What makes this year's scholarship particularly meaningful is Monarch's personal connection to Phillip Payne. Having taught both Phillip and Case, he recognized many of the same qualities in the two young machinists.
"I was fortunate enough to have taught Philip Payne during his high-school years, and I see many of the same admirable qualities in Case that I saw in Philip."
The Phillip Payne Memorial Tool Scholarship provides a professional tool package to support the development of promising young machinists in the Atlas Apprenticeship Program. Established in Phillip's memory, the scholarship honors his craftsmanship, positive attitude, and unwavering dedication to his trade.
Since joining Atlas, Case has continued developing his skills and gaining hands-on experience, including opportunities to assist with equipment repairs in the field. His determination to learn, improve, and take pride in his work makes him a deserving recipient of this year's scholarship.
Through the Phillip Payne Memorial Tool Scholarship and Atlas's Apprenticeship Program, we remain committed to honoring Phillip's legacy while investing in the next generation of skilled machinists who demonstrate what it truly means to be Powered by People.
