When critical equipment is on the line, there’s no room for error. That was the case for a customer in Texas who needed existing bull gear mounting holes bored out on a large industrial kiln. The work wasn’t just important, it was essential to keeping the entire operation moving forward.
Atlas Machine & Supply’s Field Machining team was called in to deliver a precise, on-site solution that would meet tight tolerances and strict timelines without disrupting the project.
The project required enlarging twelve existing bull gear mounting holes from 2.750 inches to 3.000 inches, all while maintaining a tight tolerance of ±0.005 inches.
This wasn’t just a routine machining job. These mounting holes play a critical role in the functionality and alignment of the kiln. If they weren’t machined correctly, the equipment wouldn’t operate as intended.
On top of that, the work had to be completed on-site in Texas City, requiring careful coordination, planning, and execution in a field environment.
Success on a job like this starts long before the first cut is made.
One of the biggest challenges was developing a fixturing strategy that would allow for consistent, repeatable boring across all twelve holes. Atlas addressed this through detailed pre-job planning and close collaboration with the customer to fully understand the scope and expectations.
Once on site, the team:
Every setup was intentional. Every step was controlled. The goal was simple: get it right the first time.
From the start, this project required more than machining capability. It required confidence.
Atlas approached the job with a clear focus on execution and communication. The team worked closely with the customer throughout the process, ensuring alignment at every stage and eliminating uncertainty in the field.
And when the scope expanded, Atlas didn’t hesitate.
While still on site, the customer requested an additional quote for another job. Atlas responded immediately, evaluating the request and providing a clear path forward without slowing down the current project.
That responsiveness is part of what sets Atlas apart. It’s not just about completing the job, it’s about being ready to solve the next problem before it becomes one.
The final outcome delivered exactly what the customer needed.
Beyond the technical success, the customer recognized Atlas for its professionalism, responsiveness, and ability to execute under pressure.
Projects like this highlight what field machining is really about.
It’s not just about cutting metal. It’s about preparation, problem-solving, and delivering results in environments where failure isn’t an option.
Through careful planning, effective fixturing, and strong collaboration, Atlas was able to support a critical kiln application and keep the customer’s operation on track.
